Service Learning in STEM International Workshop: Applications of Statistics in Community Surveys  

March 17, 2019. Service-Learning in STEM International Workshop: Applications of Statistics in Community Surveys was organized on campus in Vietnam by SL-STEAM Research Group, Department of Mathematics & Computer Science. University of Science, Vietnam National University at Ho Chi Minh City coordinating with Chinese University of Hong Kong.

At the workshop, 6 professors of the Chinese University of Hong Kong from different disciplines joined the discussion with more than 150 participants who represented educators, teachers, researchers, and students nation-wide. Representing the University of Science, professor Tran Van Man (Science & Technology Department Chair), Dr. Huynh Quang Vu (Dean of Mathematics and Computer Science ) gladly attended. Representing our partner from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, professor Hon-Ming Lam (School of Life Sciences), professor Lap-ah Tse (School of Public Health and Primary Care), professor May Chu (CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute), professor Francisco Cisternas (CUHK Business School), Dr. Carolina Contador (School of Life Sciences), Mr. Paul Pak Wan Major (Govt. and Public Administration) presented at the workshop.

Presentations by experts from Hong Kong

In the morning session, experts from Hong Kong shared their reports and experience on the role and purpose of statistics applied in research, especially in practical community surveys design for specific projects. Their presentations were informative for workshop attendees. In the afternoon session, the experts trained attendees to use and improve survey quality via mock interviews and interactive group discussion. Key takeaways were practical survey design tools for participants to perform thorough research on their community for problem-solving and social betterment by Service Learning models and STEM-related projects.

Professor Hon-Ming Lam endorsed workshop organizers for their professionalism and collaboration, especially for SL-STEAM research group. In addition, professor Dang Duc Trong, representing the organizers, showed deep appreciation to the team of experts from Hong Kong for their shared experience and kind support.
