Lê Phạm Hoàng Trung graduated with Distinction in Artificial Intelligence from VNUHCM-University of Science, Class of 2025.
Graduating with an impressive GPA of 9.49 out of 10, Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng has been recognised as an outstanding graduate in Mathematics during the 2025 graduation round at VNUHCM-University of Science.
This remarkable achievement reflects a four-year journey of dedication, perseverance and intellectual passion – a testament to the resolve of a young scholar committed to mastering a subject often seen as abstract and austere.
Throughout the undergraduate years, Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng consistently excelled in academic competitions. Notable achievements include a Silver Medal at the 2022 Mathematics Olympiad, Second Prize in Algebra at the 2023 National Mathematics Olympiad, and outstanding performance in the SCUDEM international mathematical modelling competition in 2024 and 2025. The academic journey culminated in a Bronze Medal at the AKHIMO International Mathematics Olympiad in 2025.
Reflecting on the time spent at HCMUS, Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng described this period as one of challenges and discovery. Despite numerous academic pressures, a steadfast love for Mathematics remained unchanged. “Faced with several options, I remained devoted to Mathematics. I firmly believe that this field opens many doors – both in research and in real-world applications,” said Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng.
A Nurturing Environment for Academic Growth
The undergraduate experience at HCMUS provided a dynamic and enriching academic environment. From lectures at the VNUHCM urban campus to specialised seminars, from difficulties in non-major subjects to memorable successes in international contests, each experience shaped a calm, resilient and focused student.
“At first, there was consideration of choosing a different subject. However, after careful thought, the affection for Mathematics proved too strong to ignore,” shared Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng. Mathematics was never merely about abstract theorems, but also about understanding the history behind great discoveries and systems of reasoning. This appreciation deepened with each year of study, revealing the intellectual richness embedded within the discipline.

A strong commitment to learning and discovery extended beyond lectures and coursework. In the third year, a mathematical model in biology developed as part of the SCUDEM competition earned the team top honours – a pivotal moment that broadened the perspective on applied mathematics. However, above all, the academic culture at HCMUS left the most lasting impression, where students are genuinely supported to pursue growth.
“Lecturers at the university demonstrate not only subject expertise but also deep concern for students’ development. Opportunities were provided to enrol in advanced modules, and strong references were offered for academic pursuits beyond the university. On more than one occasion, strengths were recognised by lecturers even before they were realised personally,” recalled Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng.
From the Lecture Theatre to the Academic Dream
Alongside academic efforts, active involvement in student organisations, academic clubs and research groups played a central role in shaping key skills. These activities offered lessons in prioritisation, self-discipline, and time management – valuable tools for anyone pursuing a demanding academic path. Over time, these experiences helped define a long-term goal: to enter academia as a university lecturer.
Plans are underway to begin a Master’s degree in Mathematics in Germany from October 2025. Should everything progress as hoped, doctoral study will follow, with the intention of returning to HCMUS to teach and contribute to future generations. Returning to the alma mater is seen as the most meaningful way to give back to the academic community that shaped this journey. At the same time, a strong sense of responsibility underpins this goal – to remain engaged with current developments, to inspire, and to support others on similar paths.
For Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng, the study of Mathematics is not confined to logic and formulas; the discipline encourages critical thinking and a holistic approach to problem-solving. This mindset has proved especially useful in navigating the digital age, where online content often presents skewed or sensationalised perspectives. “Rather than being swayed by dramatic headlines on social media, I focus on the bigger picture and analyse the deeper causes. This approach fosters independent thinking and clarity,” shared Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng.
When asked to send a message to the first-year version of oneself, the response was simple: “Pursue passion with perseverance. Good things will follow.” The same message is offered to future cohorts – those preparing to walk a path filled with challenges, but also tremendous value.
