[OUTSTANDING ROLE MODELS] PROF. TRẦN VĂN HIẾU: THE JOURNEY TO PURSUE APPLIED BIOLOGY TECHNOLOGY

Prof. Trần Văn Hiếu is a researcher who has published 97 papers in scientific journals. Of these, 40 were published in prestigious international journals, with 35 of them authored by Prof. Hiếu as the lead author after attaining the title of Associate Professor. He is also the sole author of a monograph published by a reputable domestic publisher, as well as two textbooks and a guidebook.

After initially forgoing a career in medicine, Prof. Trần Văn Hiếu discovered his true passion for Biotechnology, drawn to an adaptable approach to problem-solving and a commitment to deeply understanding the fundamental challenges in the field. His academic journey began at the Faculty of the Biology – Biotechnology, University of Science, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, where he later contributed to the faculty and inspired future generations of students.

Prof. Hiếu’s research includes high-impact projects in healthcare and aquaculture, such as the development of a cancer treatment drug that is 300 times more effective than previous treatments, as well as the creation of the world’s first test kit for Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) in shrimp. Currently, his team is focused on developing inhalable and oral vaccines for lung and intestinal health.

Prof. Hiếu advocates for the importance of practical applications in research and encourages young scientists to seize funding opportunities, while clearly demonstrating the feasibility and urgency of their work. As a lecturer, he employs a distinctive teaching style that promotes critical thinking through weekly assessments and essay assignments, enhancing student learning in a manageable way.

Prof. Trần Văn Hiếu is an alumnus of the University of Science’s Biotechnology programme, having graduated between 1999 and 2003. He earned his Master’s in Microbiology from 2003 to 2006, and completed his DSc in Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Würzburg University (Germany) from 2007 to 2011. Upon returning to Viet Nam, he became Associate Professor in 2016 and was promoted to Professor in 2024.

Some of Prof. Hiếu’s notable works include::

1. The development of a cancer treatment drug using recombinant GM-CSF from P. pastoris, which was found to be 327 times more active than that from S. cerevisiae. This research began in 2013 with the support of the HCMC Department of Science and Technology.

2. The application of FGF-2 in treating severe skin burns, accelerating wound healing. This research, launched in 2021 with VNUHCM, has led to advancements in burn treatment.

3. The creation of the world’s first test kit for the rapid detection of toxins causing AHPND in shrimp, initiated in 2018 as part of a state-funded project. This innovation laid the foundation for the development of rapid test kits in aquaculture, veterinary, and agricultural sectors.

Prof. Trần Văn Hiếu and the faculty members of the Faculty of Biology – Biotechnology have been appointed or reappointed to the positions of Professor and Associate Professor. He currently serves as Head of the Laboratory of Biosensors in the Faculty of Biology – Biotechnology, VNUHCM-University of Science.
