On 7 July, as part of the Visiting Professor Programme of VNUHCM in 2025, the Faculty of Physics – Engineering Physics, VNUHCM-University of Science, organised a scientific seminar entitled “Photonics in 2D Materials and Applications”. The event featured Dr Nguyễn Tuấn Hưng, attracting the attendance of numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as academic staff.

Dr Nguyễn Tuấn Hưng is currently an Assistant Professor and Principal Researcher at the Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences (FRIS), Tohoku University, Japan, and also serves as a Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States.

The seminar offered an in-depth perspective on nonlinear optical phenomena—particularly second-harmonic generation (SHG)—in two-dimensional materials and heterostructures. Various optimisation methods were discussed, including layer stacking and strain engineering, to enhance such effects. Beyond the academic insights, the seminar also introduced two open-source software tools: QERaman and QR2-code, developed to support the calculation of resonant Raman spectra. These tools, now publicly available on GitHub, are valuable resources for simulating and analysing electronic and phononic properties in advanced materials research.

On behalf of the organising committee, Assoc. Prof. Huỳnh Văn Tuấn, Dean of the Faculty of Physics – Engineering Physics, presented a commemorative gift to the guest researcher.

In addition to the specialised content, the seminar conveyed a modern research mindset through the directions being pursued by researcher Nguyễn Tuấn Hưng. A highlight of the presentation was the integration of materials simulation with artificial intelligence, aimed at enhancing the understanding and exploitation of physical properties, especially in semiconductor research and the development of clean-energy materials.

Through the seminar, participants not only gained exposure to advanced tools and emerging scientific trends but also developed a deeper understanding of how technological innovations are shaping the future of materials science. The session proved particularly valuable for young researchers seeking to define their academic trajectories and research applications.
