[DOCTORAL THESIS DEFENCE] RESEARCHER VÕ HOÀNG MINH THƯ DEFENDS DOCTORAL THESIS ON ALGEBRAICITY IN DIVISION RINGS

On 7 February 2026, VNUHCM–University of Science (HCMUS) hosted the doctoral thesis defence of researcher Võ Hoàng Minh Thư, specialising in Algebra and Number Theory (Class of 2018). The thesis, entitled “Algebraicity in Division Rings”, was conducted under the academic supervision of Professor Mai Hoàng Biên and Professor Bùi Xuân Hải.

The core of this research examines the conditions under which a division ring can be classified as algebraic or finite-dimensional over the centre, situated within the broader context of the Kurosh conjecture in algebra. On this basis, the study provides a rigorous analysis of the algebraicity of specific classes of elements within division rings, including additive commutators, multiplicative commutators, and symmetric elements in cases where the division ring is equipped with an involution.

Researcher Võ Hoàng Minh Thư presenting the research findings to the examination committee.

The thesis elucidates the relationship between the algebraicity of commutators and the algebraicity of the division ring as a whole, while establishing new results regarding the dimension of a division ring over the centre when the set of symmetric elements satisfies certain algebraic conditions. Furthermore, the research identifies a significant correlation between generalised rational identities and the finite-dimensionality of division rings in the presence of anti-isomorphisms.

The examination committee concluded that the thesis meets all required standards for scientific content and formal presentation, noting that this work serves as a valuable reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The thesis was formally approved in accordance with the doctoral training regulations of HCMUS.
