[OUTSTANDING ROLE MODELS] PROF. MAI HOÀNG BIÊN: “IF I HADN’T WORKED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE, I PROBABLY WOULDN’T HAVE ACHIEVED THE PROFESSOR TITLE BY NOW”

Professor Mai Hoàng Biên was recognised as one of the candidates who achieved the professor standard due to his outstanding contributions to theoretical mathematics research. He also actively inspires the next generation of students by incorporating the history of mathematics into his teaching.

Prof. Mai Hoàng Biên, from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Science, Viet Nam University Ho Chi Minh City, expressed his deep gratitude for the institution that has shaped his career. His passion for mathematics led him to focus on theoretical aspects, such as algebraic structures, while also maintaining an interest in applied mathematics.

He recalled the challenges of scholarly publishing, including rejections that often coincided with significant times, such as the Tet New Year, alongside the joy of receiving acceptances. Achieving the professor standard brought him pride and reinforced his commitment to teaching and research, emphasising continuous learning and striving in academia.

Prof. Biên integrated historical context into his lectures to engage students and inspire a love for the rich history of mathematics in Viet Nam. He acknowledged that balancing personal life with research presented challenges but remained dedicated to guiding future scholars.

Looking ahead, he aimed to continue his research, support students, and contribute to the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science while pursuing practical applications of his work.
