On the morning of 11 November 2024, the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Earth Science and Sustainable Development (CESD) 2024 took place at the VNUHCM-University of Science.
This conference was part of the university’s 14th Scientific Conference (VNUHCM-US-Conf 2024) and attracted a significant number of scientists, lecturers, students, and experts in Earth Science and Sustainable Development from countries including Poland, South Korea, Taiwan, and Viet Nam.
In his opening speech, Assoc. Prof. Trần Lê Quan, President of the University of Science, emphasised the importance of the conference in fostering interdisciplinary research and collaboration. He stated:
“It is a great honour to welcome esteemed guests to CESD 2024. At VNUHCM-University of Science, various departments are involved in Earth Science and Sustainable Development, including the Faculty of Environment; the Faculty of Geology; the Department of Oceanography, Meteorology and Hydrology and the Department of Geophysics from the Faculty of Physics and Engineering Physics; the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; the Centre for Research on Natural Resource Conservation; and the Centre for Greenhouse Gas Research and Climate Change. It is hoped that the insights and findings from our scientific research can be shared with friends and partners. Collaboration is essential to protect our planet and make it greener and safer for humanity.”
Assoc. Prof. Trần Lê Quan highlighted that in recent decades, Earth Science and Sustainable Development have become crucial fields, enhancing our understanding of the planet while also providing practical solutions for addressing global issues such as natural disasters, climate change, and resource depletion. He affirmed:
“The research and application of knowledge from Earth Science not only assist in protecting our environment but also ensure sustainable development for future generations. This serves as a vital foundation for building a peaceful and sustainable world.”
The CESD 2024 conference featured a plenary session with presentations from guest speakers, alongside five thematic sub-sections, facilitating collaboration and the exchange of research findings among scientists from various fields.
Assoc. Prof. Trần Lê Quan expressed deep gratitude to the professors, scientists, students, and members of the organising committee whose contributions made the conference successful. He extended his wishes for health, happiness, and success to all attendees, hoping that the conference would yield substantial benefits for the sustainable development of humanity.
CESD 2024 is anticipated to be a significant scientific event, contributing to the promotion of international collaboration and interdisciplinary research in Earth Science.
