On 10 February 2026, VNUHCM–University of Science (HCMUS) and Thong Nhat Hospital (Ministry of Health) have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate in the fields of education and scientific research. The ceremony took place at the HCMUS Nguyen Van Cu campus.

Regarding HCMUS, the ceremony was attended by Associate Professor Trần Lê Quan – President; Professor Ngô Đại Nghiệp – Head of External Relations; Associate Professor Trương Hải Nhung – Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology; Dr Bùi Thị Như Ngọc – Vice Dean; Professor Đặng Thị Phương Thảo – Head of the Molecular Biotechnology Laboratory; and Professor Trần Lê Bảo Hà – Head of the Tissue Engineering and Biomedical Materials Laboratory, alongside representatives from various university units.

Representing Thong Nhat Hospital were Associate Professor Lê Đình Thanh – Director; Associate Professor Võ Thành Toàn – Vice Director of the Institute of Applied Health Sciences and Ageing; and Dr Lưu Phước Lợi – Head of Biomedical Sciences, accompanied by specialists from the hospital’s clinical divisions.

Under the terms of the agreement, both institutions have committed to a long-term partnership focused on three strategic pillars.

Firstly, the two parties shall coordinate in the research and development of scientific projects within the biomedical sector, encompassing medical data mining, professional knowledge exchange, and the application of laboratory techniques and biomedical experimentation. Clinical research and trials will be conducted in strict accordance with institutional mandates and prevailing legal regulations. Both sides shall share ownership of scientific outputs resulting from joint studies, aiming to standardise research and clinical applications in line with international benchmarks.

Secondly, Thong Nhat Hospital will serve as a host institution for HCMUS students and postgraduates, providing opportunities for site visits, short-term observations, and long-term internships. Students will be supported in conducting theses and research projects under the joint supervision of academics and clinical experts from both organisations. Furthermore, continuous professional development will be enhanced through the exchange of lecturers and specialists for advanced education modules.

Thirdly, both institutions will co-organise courses, seminars, conferences, and periodic education programmes. These activities are designed to foster professional growth and enhance the technical skills of staff, researchers, and students specialising in relevant fields.

 

During the ceremony, representatives from both organisations emphasised that strengthening ties between academic institutions and healthcare providers is vital for improving educational quality, expanding practical and research opportunities for learners, and contributing to the development of a highly-skilled biomedical workforce capable of addressing modern societal demands.
