A joyful and commemorative atmosphere fills the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the VNUHCM-University of Science Library.
On the afternoon of 10 May, the VNUHCM-University of Science solemnly held a ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Library’s establishment, under the theme: “30-Year Journey – Igniting Creativity, Lighting the Future.” This meaningful occasion reflected on the Library’s formation and development, recognising its enduring contributions to the University’s mission in education and scientific research over the past three decades.
The ceremony was honoured by the presence of Mr Văn Chí Nam – Vice President, Prof. Nguyễn Trung Nhân – Vice President, representatives from various faculties, departments, and centres of the University; leaders and staff from the VNUHCM Library System and partner libraries; former library leaders and staff from different periods, as well as a large number of students and postgraduate learners.
A Proud Legacy and Vision for the Future
In his congratulatory remarks, Mr Văn Chí Nam commended the Library’s proud achievements and affirmed:
“The Library of the VNUHCM-University of Science is not merely a repository of knowledge, but an integral part of the University’s journey in education and research.”

On this special milestone, he outlined three key directions for the Library’s future development, such as fostering a reading culture and academic spirit through seminars, forums, and themed programmes; expanding digital resources and developing online learning materials, enabling access anytime, anywhere; standardising and modernising learning spaces at both campuses to meet diverse learning needs in the context of digital transformation.
From Traditional Roots to a Modern Knowledge Hub

Thirty years may not be long in historical terms, but it is enough to leave a deep imprint on the many generations of staff, lecturers, and students who have been part of the Library’s journey. From humble beginnings and numerous challenges, the Library has continuously innovated, transitioning from a traditional model to a modern one. These advancements include: the open-shelf model; the use of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), AACR2 cataloguing; Dublin Core metadata standards; an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC); the launch of the Library website (using the spidering method – 1997); and the development of digital and creative library spaces, embracing new technological trends and service innovations.
Celebrating a Milestone, Shaping the Future

He further remarked:
“Today’s library is no longer a place that merely ‘stores books’, but a hub for knowledge connection, nurturing self-directed learning, research, and lifelong creativity.”
In a heartfelt moment, Mr Hòa expressed deep gratitude to generations of University leaders – especially Mr Nguyễn Minh Hiệp (Library Director 1995–2012) and Ms Dương Thúy Hương (Library Director 2012–2021) – who laid the foundation for the modern university library model at the institution. He also extended sincere thanks to all staff, collaborators, and readers who have accompanied the Library throughout its development.
A Celebration Rich with Meaningful Activities

The ceremony featured various engaging and meaningful activities, including: a screening of the documentary “30-Year Journey – Creating Towards the Future”, tributes to former library staff, recognition of active readers, a panel discussion with guest speakers, and the finale and awards ceremony for the “Read to Share 2025” competition. An exhibition of documents and photographs showcasing the Library’s development journey also drew special interest from students and guests alike.

A New Chapter of Innovation and Connection
The 30th anniversary of the Library is not only a moment to honour those who have helped build the University’s knowledge foundation, but also a turning point heralding a new chapter – one that is more modern, more creative, and more connected. With a spirit of service, innovation, and integration, the Library of VNUHCM-University of Science will continue to be a reliable companion for learners in their pursuit of knowledge and sustainable development in the digital era.
