UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE ACHIEVES EXCELLENCE AT THE EURÉKA 2024 SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH STUDENT AWARDS

On 8 December, during the closing ceremony of the 26th Scientific Research Student Awards – Euréka, University of Science at Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City made a significant impact, with numerous outstanding research projects receiving accolades.

The University of Science excelled by securing two First Prizes, one Second Prize, one Third Prize, and nine Encouragement Awards across various fields. Specifically, the project “Smart Idea Design System,” developed by students Võ Đình Khôi and Nguyễn Hoàng Phúc, under the supervision of Associate Professor Trần Minh Triết and Dr. Lê Trung Nghĩa, was honoured with the First Prize in the Information Technology category. The project “Survey on the Polystyrene Degradation Ability of Certain Mushroom Species,” led by student Huỳnh Ngọc Quế Anh and guided by Dr. Nguyễn Thị Mỹ Lan and BSc. Lê Thị Thanh Loan, also received the First Prize in the Biology field.

Additionally, several other projects in the Information Technology field, including “DOLG-CNet: Deep Orthogonal Fusion of Local and Global Features Combined with Contrastive Learning and Deep Supervision for Polyp Segmentation” and “Fake News Analysis and Detection,” were recognised with Second and Third Prizes. Furthermore, the university had nine projects that received Encouragement Awards in the fields of Information Technology, Agricultural Science, Medical Science, and Physics. The diversity and richness of the research topics demonstrated the continuous efforts of students at the University of Science to apply their knowledge in addressing practical issues in life.

In her opening speech at the ceremony, Professor Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai, Vice Chancellor of Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, stated that this year the awards continued to receive strong participation, with 1,903 projects submitted by 5,991 students from 152 universities, colleges, and academies nationwide. Notably, the application of artificial intelligence across various fields had become a highlighted aspect of the awards.

Specifically, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City had 186 projects from its member units participating in the awards, including two new units: the School of Medicine, which submitted 11 projects, and the Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City’s branch in Ben Tre province, which submitted five projects. Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City had 37 projects reach the finals, accounting for nearly 20% of the total projects in the final round of the awards.

“With the support of Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, the awards have become a launching pad for many young talents, helping them confidently step into the world and contribute positively to the country’s development,” emphasised Professor Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai.

The Scientific Research Student Awards – Euréka not only serves as an intellectual playground but also acts as a source of encouragement, motivating students to express their creativity and independent thinking. Over 26 years of organisation, the awards have become an indispensable part of nurturing the next generation of young scientists, contributing to the overall development of education and science in Viet Nam. This year, a total of 1,903 projects participated from 152 universities, colleges, and academies nationwide. The organising committee awarded prizes to the 187 most outstanding projects, including 15 First Prizes, 14 Second Prizes, 18 Third Prizes, and 140 Encouragement Awards. The total value of the awards exceeded 414 million VND.
