The research project titled “Geochemical Characteristics and Groundwater Quality in the South Phan Thiet Coastal Area, Binh Thuan” was led by MSc. Nguyễn Thùy Dung. The project aimed to investigate the geochemical characteristics and groundwater quality in the South Phan Thiet coastal area, providing valuable insights for water resource management and protection, particularly in the context of climate change.
On 13th February, the VNUHCM Scientific and Technological Project Evaluation Council held a meeting to assess the research project titled “Geochemical Characteristics and Groundwater Quality in the South Phan Thiet Coastal Area, Binh Thuan” at VNUHCM-University of Science. The project was led by MSc. Nguyễn Thùy Dung, project leader and a lecturer in the Faculty of Geology at VNUHCM-University of Science.
Research Content and Methodology
The primary aim of the project was to investigate the geochemical characteristics and groundwater quality in the South Phan Thiet coastal area. The research concentrated on gathering and compiling data related to the region’s geology, hydrogeology, and the current state of water extraction and usage.
To achieve this, the research team conducted field surveys and collected 19 groundwater samples at the end of February 2023. Each sample was carefully documented, noting its location and well characteristics, with field measurements such as pH, TDS, and EC recorded on-site. The chemical and physical properties of the samples were then analysed using methods recommended by the American Public Health Association (APHA).
From these analyses, pH, EC, and TDS values for the groundwater were obtained. Geochemical diagrams, including those of Piper and Gibbs, were constructed to better understand the geochemical processes occurring in the area. With these results, the team calculated the Groundwater Quality Index (GWQI) and applied Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) interpolation technology. Using ArcGIS 10.8 software, they developed quality maps for each of the analysed parameters.

Research Results and Applications
The project resulted in several notable professional outcomes. These included detailed analysis of the chemical composition of 19 groundwater samples, which provided valuable insights into the area’s water quality. Additionally, the project produced quality zoning maps for each parameter, as well as for the Groundwater Quality Index (GWQI), which further contributed to understanding the spatial distribution of groundwater quality across the region. Furthermore, a comprehensive final report was compiled, summarising the project’s findings, methodology, and key outcomes.
As a testament to the scientific value of the research, one paper was published in the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, which is indexed in Scopus. This publication highlights the significant contribution of the project to the broader field of environmental science. Moreover, three students successfully completed and defended their graduation theses as part of this project, contributing not only to the academic advancement of the individuals involved but also to the enhancement of educational quality at the institution.

The Evaluation Council commended the research team for their dedicated efforts and the outcomes achieved throughout the project. The research provided essential insights into the groundwater quality of the South Phan Thiet coastal area and made a valuable contribution to water resource management and protection. This work has particular relevance in the context of the increasing challenges posed by climate change, underlining the importance of effective water management strategies in the region.
