In a promising first participation at the Al-Khorezmi International Mathematical Olympiad (AKHIMO) 2025—a global mathematics competition for undergraduate students—a team from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, VNUHCM-University of Science (HCMUS) recorded a noteworthy result, with a Bronze Medal awarded to Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng.

First Participation at AKHIMO

Held from 26 to 31 May at Urgench State University in Uzbekistan, AKHIMO 2025 competition brought together nearly 250 undergraduate students from 57 leading global institutions, including Stanford University (USA), the University of Tokyo (Japan), Seoul National University (South Korea), and the University of Science and Technology of China, among others.

The delegation from HCMUS consisted of Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng, Đỗ Tiền Hải, and Nguyễn Xuân Tiến, under the academic mentorship of Dr Nguyễn Hữu Trí Nhật, lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. Following two days of rigorous competition, the organisers awarded 10 Gold Medals, 18 Silver Medals, and 27 Bronze Medals. Among the medalists, Trần Nguyễn Nam Hưng was the sole representative from HCMUS to receive a distinction.

Academic Advancement and International Engagement

Participation in AKHIMO 2025 aligns with the institutional strategy of enhancing academic quality and promoting international exposure for learners, as well as the initiative continues a longstanding tradition of global academic engagement fostered by HCMUS. Despite being the university’s first entry into AKHIMO, the outcome reflects a well-prepared approach and a strong academic orientation toward international integration.

The student team was meticulously selected and rigorously practised with academic guidance from faculty members in the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. The objective extended beyond medal aspirations to equipping students with experience in international competition, nurturing logical reasoning skills, and developing independent research capabilities in mathematics and the fundamental sciences.

Outlook for Future Participation

Building on the achievement, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science continues to expand advanced training programmes, enhance academic partnerships with overseas institutions, and prepare high-calibre teams for future editions of AKHIMO and other global academic competitions.

Encouraging student participation in international knowledge-based platforms is a key component of HCMUS’s sustainable development strategy, aimed at cultivating a scientifically grounded, globally competent, and socially contributive generation of graduates ready to lead in an increasingly interconnected world.
