NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE 2024: “FUNDAMENTAL SCIENCE WITH NATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY”

On the afternoon of 9 December, a delegation from the University of Science, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, led by Assoc. Prof. Trần Minh Triết, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of the University, attended the National Scientific Conference 2024 on the theme “Fundamental Science with National Responsibility” at the VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The conference served as a platform for sharing experiences and enhancing collaboration among universities specialising in fundamental science across the country, bringing together over 80 scientists, lecturers, and managers from six leading universities in Viet Nam: the VNUHCM-University of Science, the VNU University of Science, the VNUHCM-University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the University of Science and Education – the University of Da Nang, and Da Lat University. Additionally, representatives from the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs and Viet Nam National University, Ha Noi also participated in the conference.

During the conference, Assoc. Prof. Trần Văn Mẫn, representing the VNUHCM-University of Science, emphasised the crucial role of fundamental science in guiding the development of national science and technology. Assoc. Prof. Mẫn remarked, “Fundamental science provides profound insights into nature and society, clarifying the laws of nature. This serves as a foundation for developing breakthrough technologies, contributing to the resolution of specific societal issues.” The strategy for the development of science and technology up to 2030 aimed to transform science, technology, and innovation into the primary driving force for economic growth, with the expected outcome of turning Viet Nam into a modern industrial country with a high average income.

The conference featured lively discussion sessions and valuable presentations. Notable presentations included a report on the achievements of 30 years of training and research in fundamental science at the VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities, research on the role of fundamental science in policy consultation and local development from the VNUHCM-University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and topics related to the application of fundamental science in formulating socio-economic development policies for the North Central Coast and Central Coastal regions presented by the University of Science and Education – the University of Da Nang. The topic of fundamental science and international integration was presented by the VNU University of Science.

Throughout the conference, delegates focused on discussing four main topics: the role of fundamental science in drafting the documents for the XIV Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam; contributions to policy formulation in economy – culture – society; local development consultation; and international integration. The contributions from the conference were not only academic but also closely linked to practical applications, aimed at the common goal of enhancing the quality of research and training.

The conference concluded with a strong consensus on solutions to promote cooperation, innovate financial mechanisms, and enhance research capacity. This was regarded as an important step, affirming the central role of fundamental science in the country’s development.
