PROFESSOR NGUYỄN THỊ THANH MAI WAS ELECTED AS A FELLOW OF THE WORLD ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (TWAS)

Recently, TWAS announced the election of 74 new fellows, among whom was Professor Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai, the former Vice President of the Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City – University of Science, and the Principal of the High School for the Gifted, VNU-HCM.

Born in 1974 in Quảng Ngãi, Professor Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai had an impressive journey in education and research. After graduating in Chemistry, she pursued a PhD in Japan, became an Associate Professor in 2014, and attained full Professorship in 2021. Notably, she was conferred the title of Distinguished Teacher in 2024.

With over ten years of research on Vietnamese medicinal plants, Professor Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai developed two products aimed at treating gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis using domestic herbs. She also published more than 80 articles in prestigious international scientific journals.

In 2019, her research team received the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award for their study on products derived from honeybees in Viet Nam. Additionally, she was awarded the Kovalevskaia Prize in 2021 for her outstanding contributions to scientific research and application.

Her research project titled “Inhibition Activity of Xanthine Oxidase from Vietnamese Medicinal Plants” yielded significant findings for the treatment of ailments such as gout, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, gastric ulcers, and cancer, bridging traditional medicine with modern science.

This achievement is not only a personal honour but also a considerable source of pride for Vietnamese science. It affirmes Viet Nam’s development and international integration in the field of scientific research. She serves as an inspirational figure for the growing community of Vietnamese female intellectuals, reinforcing their roles and status within the global scientific community. It is hoped that her valuable contributions will continue to benefit the community and promote scientific research in the future.
