YOUTH SYMPHONY NO. 5: WHEN CLASSICAL MUSIC TAKES A PLACE IN HCMUS LECTURE THEATRE

The fifth concert in the “Youth Symphony” series, organised by VNUHCM–University of Science (HCMUS), took place at the Lecture Hall 1, creating a warm and inspiring chamber music experience—where music naturally integrates with education.

On the afternoon of Friday, 6 June, VNUHCM–University of Science (HCMUS) hosted the fifth concert in the “Youth Symphony” series, themed “Chamber Music: A Conversation of Sounds.” The event offered a refined artistic experience combining performance with interaction, helping students and music enthusiasts engage with chamber music in a relaxed and direct manner.

Immersing in the Artistic Space

At the event, Assoc. Prof. Trần Minh Triết, Vice President of VNUHCM-University of Science, expressed great honour that the university served as the host, joining artists and students in an inspiring artistic environment. Assoc. Prof. Trần Minh Triết shared:

Music forms a bridge that leads to profound and beautiful emotions. This occasion offers students the chance to become familiar with emotionally rich sounds, thereby broadening their perception of life.

Following several concerts hosted by various member universities, chamber music has become more approachable for students, touching deeper layers of emotion and thought. This meaningful initiative brings academic music closer to campus life, nurturing a love for music and artistic expression among students. Assoc. Prof. Trần Minh Triết expressed hope that students would fully immerse themselves in the artistic atmosphere, listen attentively, and embrace the emotions conveyed by conductor Trần Nhật Minh and the performers.

Some feelings cannot be conveyed in words. Yet when music begins and a sense of resonance emerges, a rich inner world may be awakened—fostering creativity in learning, research, and self-development,” emphasised Assoc. Prof. Trần Minh Triết.

Gratitude was extended to conductor Trần Nhật Minh and the accompanying artists for contributing to a meaningful artistic experience and enriching the spiritual life within the academic environment.

Showcasing Masterpieces of Chamber Music

The fifth concert in the series introduced students to chamber music—a classical genre known for emotional depth—featuring iconic works by some of the world’s greatest composers, with a particular emphasis on Mozart, a towering figure in music history. The event drew more than 400 student participants.

Conductor Trần Nhật Minh explained that prior to the development of large-scale symphony orchestras with extensive instrumentation and complex compositions, music began in simpler forms such as solo works, quartets, and chamber ensembles. The term “chamber music” evokes the image of a small, intimate setting—where performances are received with focus and appreciation, and where performers engage in close musical dialogue.

The concert formed part of the Youthful Symphony series, a special programme held from January to July 2025 at VNUHCM and other member institutions. Each performance presents a distinct theme and style, delivered in a combined format of performance and guided commentary, enabling audiences to appreciate the sophistication of classical music genres. The seven-part series introduces students to a wide range of musical forms, including symphony, chamber music, opera, Broadway, and jazz, among others.

Now progressing beyond halfway through the series, “Youth Symphony” continues to attract consistent interest owing to a friendly approach, careful content curation, and a commitment to serving the student community. Each concert provides an open learning space—where music acts as a conduit between performers and audience, between art and education.

Classical music is not exclusive to those with in-depth theoretical knowledge. Rather, it opens doors for all who carry a spirit of openness and a passion for learning—key attributes for becoming culturally aware citizens in today’s world.
