SIGNING CEREMONY OF MOU BETWEEN SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA – SAN DIEGO, USA AND UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE, VIET NAM NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HO CHI MINH CITY

On 29th May 2023, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony was held at the Nguyen Van Cu Campus in District 5. The signing ceremony brought together representatives from the Department of Oceanography, Meteorology, and Hydrology of the Faculty of Physics — Engineering Physics at VNUHCM-University of Science and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego (USA).

Representatives from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography included:
– Dr Peter A. Rogowski, Department of Coastal Observation Research and Development, Central Laboratory for Marine Physics, UC San Diego;
– Assoc. Prof. R. Kipp Shearman, College of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University;
– Mr Richard Nguyen, Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific, Office of Naval Research (ONR);
– Prof. Javier Zavala-Garay, Faculty of Marine and Coastal Sciences, Rutgers University (attended online).
The welcoming representatives from VNUHCM-US included:
– Dr Võ Hồng Hải, Deputy Head of the External Relations Office;
– Assoc. Prof. Trần Thiện Thanh, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Physics — Engineering Physics;
– Assoc. Prof. Võ Lương Hồng Phước, Head of the Department of Oceanography, Meteorology, and Hydrology;
– Assoc. Prof. Đặng Trường Anh, Deputy Head of the Department of Oceanography, Meteorology, and Hydrology;
– And the Lecturers from the Department of Oceanography, Meteorology, and Hydrology.

 

During the ceremony, the representatives from both the Department of Oceanography, Meteorology and Hydrology, Faculty of Physics – Engineering Physics at VNUHCM-US and Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego engaged in sincere and open discussions. They expressed a shared commitment to collaboration towards common developmental objectives. Prof. Shearman remarked, “We see Viet Nam as a potential country, and VNUHCM-US is the institution we trust for cooperation and investments in scientific research.” Assoc. Prof. Hồng Phước from HCMUS affirmed the faculty’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for sustainable and long-term cooperation.

The contents of the agreement signed between the two parties encompass:

  1. Investigation, survey, and scientific research in the fields of oceanography, meteorology, environmental change, and ecology.
  2. Training and education in modern technologies for ocean research, including survey equipment, research on Marine Research Vessels, ocean models, instruments for data collection and processing, as well as establishing climate conditions and boundaries for ocean models.
  3. Training and education in the operation of measuring instruments equipped with sensor systems to assess various oceanographic factors, such as wave buoys, drifters, buoyancy devices, wave-driven gliders, and seabed topographic instrumentation.
