STEM CELL-DERIVED DRUGS FOR STROKE TREATMENT EMERGED AS THE WINNING INNOVATION AT THE STEM CELL INNOVATION CONTEST

The Stem Cell Innovation Contest awarded 20 million VND to the idea of creating drugs to support stroke treatment using secretions from stem cells. The award was presented on December 3, 2023. The research, led by Tô Quốc Hòa, Huỳnh Đào Minh Châu, and Võ Trương Đăng Huy, aims to develop an affordable oral medication that helps restore nerve cell function in stroke patients’ brains. The team utilised secretions from stem cells known as exosomes, which possess properties similar to stem cells.

The annual Stem Cell Innovation Contest, hosted by the Stem Cell Institute at VNUHCM-University of Science, is dedicated to students with a strong interest in stem cell research. This year, the competition garnered over 260 projects from teams representing 30 universities and 20 high schools.
